How to create a beautiful Thanksgiving tablescape
Some of the best conversations and experiences people had with Jesus happened at a table. For this reason, I believe the table is one of the most powerful places to gather the people we love most and engage in meaningful conversation. Especially in today’s digital world, the table reminds us to be present, slow down, and enjoy each other’s company. Your Thanksgiving tablescape is serious business.

Whether you’re a pro at hosting or brand new to creating a tablescape, this guide is for you. We host Thanksgiving every year, and for the longest time I never took the time to create a beautiful table—until this year. There’s something special about creating a space where people can gather, share, and celebrate.
Not Martha Stewart, just Mary’s and Martha’s
And here’s the best part: you don’t have to buy everything at once. Collect a few pieces over time, keep them neutral so they mix and match, and build from there. I don’t own the most expensive pieces or full sets of anything—and that’s okay. We aren’t trying to be Martha Stewarts here… we’re just trying to be Martha and Marys.

1. Choose a Theme or Color Palette
A theme or color palette helps you avoid endless options, saves money, and makes everything look cohesive. If you’re just starting out, keep it neutral and simple—you’ll be surprised at how many ways you can style the same pieces year after year.

2. Lay the Foundation
Start with a tablecloth or a runner. This is one of the most impactful pieces because it covers the most space. A runner grounds your table and brings all the pieces together.
3. Add Layers
This is where you bring in chargers, placemats, dinnerware, and glassware. Don’t be afraid to mix old and new. There’s something beautiful about pairing antique plates with modern glasses or mixing mismatched silverware with timeless dishes.

4. Design the Centerpiece
It doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Use candles for ambiance, layer in natural finds (like branches, pinecones, or greenery from your backyard), and vary the heights for interest. Just remember: if it’s too tall to see across, it may need to be moved during dinner—so keep it conversation-friendly.
Have courage and lean into the theme! Get creative and think outside the box.
5. Add Texture.
Linen napkins, woven chargers, or rustic wood details bring contrast and depth. Even something as simple as swapping paper napkins for cloth napkins tells your guests: you’re special and welcome here. After 12 years of marriage, I finally invested in linen napkins—and I’ll never go back.

6. Finish with Personal Touches
This is where you make your table your own. Try handwritten place cards, a small card at each setting that says “I’m thankful for you”, or monogrammed napkins. Even napkin rings or family photos tucked into place settings create a moment of delight for your guests.
Final Thoughts
Step by step, you can create a tablescape that feels magazine-worthy without stress or overspending. The secret is starting small: grab a set of napkins, thrift some dishes, or add a simple runner. Build your collection over time, and soon you’ll have a Thanksgiving table that reflects your heart and your home.

I can’t believe I went so many years without creating a beautiful table because I thought it was too complicated. But the truth is—it’s this simple. A little thought, a few layers, and some personal touches are all you need to create a gathering place that feels special.
