A Moody Christmas is the trending Christmas style of the year, maybe even the decade, and I am so here for it. There’s something about the jewel tones and the deep, rich colors feels earthy, grounding, and comforting.

This season, if you want to push your decor style just a little, this elegant, classic, and timeless look will absolutely knock it out of the park.. I mean, North Pole.

For my Christmas posts this year, I wanted to do something a little different. I am sharing a practical, helpful guide to decorating your home this season.

I’ve created four different Christmas styles, each with all the details you’ll need to recreate them in your own home — plus bite-size decorating tips to make a big impact without the overwhelm. This is the first of four Christmas posts in this series! Make sure to check out the rest for helpful decorating tips!

The Secret to Christmas Decorating

In the past when I shopped for Christmas decor, I would simply walk down the aisles and pick out whatever caught my eye — little decor knickknacks here and there.

That worked for the first couple of years, but eventually, I realized I didn’t have a style and that nothing was working together. That year, I stopped buying decor without a plan, and this has changed how my home looks and feels- plus, I have money for the things that matter the most.

I’m a maximalist at Christmas time, but using what we already have and creating new looks with them each year is rewarding.

Christmas Decorating Staples

When I think about decorating for Christmas, the staples usually fall into these categories:

  1. A Christmas tree
  2. Stockings and fireplace garland
  3. Decor items (bigger pieces, not just knickknacks)
  4. Wreaths and outdoor decor
  5. Wrapping Paper
  6. Experiences and memories

The Decorating Secret Every Designer Will Tell You

Don’t overthink decorating, but also don’t randomly decorate. Decorate on purpose, using your home and decorating rules to help guide you. Once you’ve gone through the list, add in the final touches and details throughout.

1. The Christmas Tree

The Christmas tree is the focal point of the room and maybe even your house. If you have more than one, apply these tips to each tree, maybe even having a more boring tree, so another tree can stand out.

  1. Choose a theme or color palette. Doing this creates a cohesive look throughout your home. I like to use my tree to create the theme of the year, as it makes a big statement.
  2. Tree Collar or Skirt. I like to use something classic and timeless. The wrapping paper is the star under the tree, so keep the skirt simple and classic.
  3. Tree topper. The topper on the tree matters! Don’t settle for something basic here.
  4. Garland & Ornaments. Sticking to your color theme, choose ornaments that match your theme and style. For a more dimensional look, have different-sized ornaments and ornaments with texture.
  5. Final Touches. Picks, clip-on candles, or tinsel to tie everything together.

As you move throughout the other decor staples, use your tree to tie the decor in through color and style. This year, focusing on each room’s moment and purpose will help you get the biggest decorating bang for your buck. I just saved you both time and money.

Create the Mood Beyond Decor

Decorating is only part of the Christmas feeling. The real magic comes from memories and traditions with the people you love. So instead of filling every corner with decorations, leave room for moments like baking cookies, singing to Christmas movies, long nights watching Christmas favorites, or even hot chocolate in pajamas.

These little moments finish off your space in ways decor never could. If you’re like me and on a debt-free journey, challenge yourself to spend as little as possible (or nothing at all) on Christmas decor this year.Use what you already have. Do it in the right order. And you’ll create something so magical without overspending.

Until next time. 🎄✨
