My Prayer Journal Set Up
Recording my prayers and collecting proof of who God is and His goodness, has changed the way I pray and deepened my walk with God. I’ve tried all sorts of prayer journals over the years. Each one was beautiful in its own way and for that season. When I need more flexibility or structure, I adjust. This blog will show you step-by-step how to start a prayer journal and my prayer journal set up.

My 2023 Prayer Journal
I’ve used everything from a simple Hobby Lobby notebook to a 3-ring binder I did watercolor in. There are so many ways to organize and use a prayer journal. Mostly, you want to use a journal that inspires you to spend more time in prayer and help you grow in your Christian walk.
I have a post on prayer and what that looks like for me. I’m also listing some of my favorite prayer resources below:
- Fervent
- Beth Moore
- This book I use to pray for my Husband and this one to pray for my kids
Journal
I chose a disc bound journal this year. I liked this one because it is smaller (A5 size) and I can easily customize it. I’ve used this over a year and like being able to add to or take away.
- disc notebook cover. Mine isn’t on amazon, but this one is similar. I like hard covers for disc rings.
- Disc Rings. I go up a bit in size to fit more pages and these make the notebook more sturdy.
- Extra Paper. I like having paper on hand.
- Simple Tabs. I use these tabs to divide the journal into the 5 sections.
Sections
- God’s Word
- Prayer
- Goals
- Notes
- Yes & Amen
Pens & Highlighters
Here are the pens I use and my favorite highlighters. This is the link to the highlighters used in this journal.
Accessories
- Paper clips : I hold my spot in each section with these
- Post it notes : To write prayer requests on.
- Prayer Bag: I purchased mine years and years ago, but this one is similiar.
Inside My Prayer Journal
The Word
This is the first section because it’s the first thing I do during prayer. I usually follow a devotion or Bible reading plan, so most of this time is spent reading, highlighting, and note taking in my Bible. If I need to take extra notes on a passage or write out a revelation I don’t want in my Bible, then I add it to this section in my prayer journal. I will also find scripture on a topic (such as peace or joy) and write it out to remember as well.
Prayer
My prayer section is really 4 steps.
- Praise & Thanksgiving: Worship, Names of God, gratitude.
- Surrender: Repentance, Forgiveness, Fruits of the Spirit
- Intercession: Prayer for the world, lost, authority, family, and friends
- Spiritual Warfare: Armor of God and scripture
I use my journal as a guide sometimes, but mostly I just refer to particular requests and make new notes or thoughts. I add new prayer requests or updates as needed.
Goals
This section is new and might seem strange, but hear me out. God wants to be in our everyday life. He’s not meant to be just for prayer in the mornings. I chose to add goals to my planner so after prayer I can have a few moments to listen and hear what God’s purpose and plans for me are. I don’t want to do life alone. Every morning it takes me 5 minutes or less to write out and review my goals for 2024.
Notes
My prayer journal doesn’t leave the house, but you could use it for church notes, extra journaling, Bible study, life notes, or just thoughts. I also write about life events I want to remember here.
Yes & Amen
Once a prayer has been answered, I remove the post-it note from prayer and add to Yes & Amen! All testimonies and answered prayers go here. If I don’t have them on a sticky, I just write it in this section and mark it “answered” under prayer. The first year I added this to my journal, my faith grew a lot. It’s powerful when you realize all the ways God has listened and fought on your behalf. He is who He says He is.
This prayer journal set up is working great for me. My time with the Lord is genuine and authentic. I enjoy documenting my time with God and growing spiritually. A prayer journal has encouraged me to be consistent in prayer and helped me process God’s word and His will for my life.
