How to declutter your home in 30 days

This will be the most helpful decluttering post you will read. My declutter plan is simple and efficient and will give your home and mind the refresh it needs. However, we didn’t get here overnight, so let this be the catalyst to change habits and continue decluttering the spaces we don’t cover in 30 days. How to declutter your home in 30 days is the best way to start decluttering.
In each space, you will need a few bins to organize what you are getting rid of, and my friend, the whole point of this challenge is to get rid of stuff. Having bins ready to go will keep you organized and moving quickly.
3 Bins and a Trash Bag
- Trash: Broken, not donatable, papers
- Donations: Duplicates, don’t use, clutter
- Rehome: Goes to another room, returns, keep but doesn’t stay in this room
- Unsure: I want to get rid of it, but I’m not sure if I’m ready yet. You only get ONE unsure bin
To begin decluttering
Before you begin, you will also need inspiration. I look to Pinterest or my Favorite Decor Books to compare our spaces, whether it be room layout or how the entry table is styled. Create a blank slate in your mind for the space, so you can dream up something new and make hard decisions when decluttering.
However, keep in mind that this challenge is for decluttering only. We aren’t cleaning and decorating per se, but if you get carried away and want to decorate AFTER decluttering, who am I to stop you?! My favorite book for decluttering inspiration.
Declutter Challenge: Week One
This week will take drive and perseverance, but I believe in you. There is no feeling like a cleaned-out closet and a tidy bedroom. The biggest space to declutter will be the closet, so let’s begin there. As you work through the space, use your bins to move as much as you can out.
Day One: Nightstand
We are kicking off the decluttering season with the nightstand! You’ll get a lot of bang for your buck today! Begin by clearing the nightstand surface, leaving only the lamp, a book, and a decorative item like a candle, picture, or plant. Then, declutter the nightstand drawers, limiting what you keep in there.

Love my Charging station to limit cords at my nightstand.
Day Two: Clothing
Pull everything out and throw away or donate as much as you can. If I haven’t decluttered in a while, I get rid of half of my wardrobe, so don’t be sparing. If you don’t love it, BYE. If you haven’t worn it in a year, GONE. The less you have left, the less you have to manage.
Group what you have left into zones.
- Short Sleeve
- Long Sleeve
- Sweaters
- Dresses
- Jackets
- Pants
- Active wear
- Pajamas

Sort grouped items together and put them away. Shop your house for baskets or bins to help create boundaries. I don’t have a fancy closet system, so I use bins to organize seasonal and travel items. Make sure to put your most used items in a easy-to-reach to reach place, while the items you use less frequently can go up high.
Day 3: Handbags & Shoes
Grab your handbags and get rid of any you haven’t used in a while or are no longer your style. Do not keep things just in case. Sort your shoes and donate any that are too worn or that you no longer wear. Purge your sock drawer, too.

Day 4: Jewelry
Grab all your jewelry and purge any that you have duplicates of, do not wear, or no longer like. Sometimes, the hardest part of decluttering is letting go because we spent money on these things, or sometimes, like jewelry, the items mean a lot to us. If you are unsure, use your unsure bin. Managing less jewelry and investing in fewer timeless pieces will bring you a lot of joy!

Day 5: Linens & Towels
Sort your linens and get rid of extras. You don’t need more than 2 sets per bed. Many times we buy new pillows and blankets, then hang on to the old ones. Go ahead and donate them or put them in the garage or attic for outdoor or camping use.
For towels, purge any that are older and raggy. I limit two per person. For dish towels, I keep 7-10. Purge those and any other towels you keep, such as cleaning rags.

Day 6: Bathroom Counter
Our goal today is to clear the bathroom counter. I try to challenge myself to one decorative item. Lately, I have kept my skincare on the counter, so group those in a tray if you do that. Wipe the counter clean, putting away any stray items left out.

Day 7: Shower Products
Today, we will declutter shower products. Throw out old bottles and consolidate what you keep in the shower. Wipe down the bottles you keep and the shelves. Replace your razor blade if it’s time, and rotate out the towels if you need to as well.

Week One is finished! You should feel encouraged and empowered to get your hands dirty. By now you have experienced that good feeling that comes from getting rid of unneeded clutter. I think about camping when I’m decluttering. Would I bring this item to a tent? If no, then the item may not be a necessity.
Week 2 Declutter challenge HERE!

In some of the rooms coming up next week, I declutter backwards to challenge myself. When I completely empty a shelf or space and only add in what we love, I can see visually what a simpler space looks like.
Which day did you see the most progress or felt the most accomplished?
See you next week!
